Spring has finally arrived in the Smoky Mountains, and honestly, there's no better time to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails near Pigeon Forge. The wildflowers are blooming, the weather's perfect (not too hot, not too cold), and the trails are calling your name!
After years of welcoming guests to our pigeon forge cabins, we've heard just about every question about local hiking spots. So we thought we'd share our favorite spring hiking trails that are close to town but feel like you've stepped into a whole different world.
Why Spring is Perfect for Hiking Near Pigeon Forge
Look, we love the Smokies year-round, but spring? That's when the magic really happens. The temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, the bugs haven't quite taken over yet, and those spring wildflowers create a carpet of color you just don't see any other time of year. Plus, the waterfalls are absolutely roaring from all that spring rain.
Our Top Spring Hiking Trails
1. Grotto Falls Trail (2.6 miles roundtrip)
This one's a family favorite for good reason. It's the only trail in the national park where you can actually walk behind the waterfall—how cool is that? The trail is moderate, so most folks can handle it, and in spring, you'll see trilliums and other wildflowers lining the path.
Trailhead: Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Pro tip: Get there early on weekends. This trail's popular, and parking fills up fast!
2. Laurel Falls Trail (2.6 miles roundtrip)
If you're staying in one of our pigeon forge cabins and want something the whole family can enjoy, Laurel Falls is your go-to. It's paved (though steep in spots), and that 80-foot waterfall at the end is absolutely worth it. In spring, the water flow is incredible.
Trailhead: Little River Road
Difficulty: Moderate
Why we love it: It's accessible enough for kids but still feels like a real mountain adventure.
3. Rainbow Falls Trail (5.4 miles roundtrip)
Okay, this one's a bit more challenging, but hear us out. Rainbow Falls drops 80 feet, and on sunny spring afternoons, you'll actually see rainbows in the mist (hence the name). The trail gains about 1,500 feet in elevation, so you'll definitely feel it in your legs, but the views are spectacular.
Trailhead: Cherokee Orchard Road
Difficulty: Strenuous
Spring bonus: The increased water flow makes this waterfall absolutely thunderous.
4. Cataract Falls (0.8 miles roundtrip)
Need something quick and easy? Cataract Falls is perfect for a morning stroll before you head into town. It's short, relatively flat, and delivers big waterfall payoff for minimal effort. Great for families with little ones or anyone who wants a taste of the mountains without the full workout.
Trailhead: Cove Mountain Road
Difficulty: Easy
Perfect for: Early morning hikes or a quick nature fix
5. Baskins Creek Trail (3 miles roundtrip)
This is one of those hidden gems we love sharing with our guests. It's less crowded than some of the other trails, and Baskins Creek Falls is a beautiful 30-foot cascade tucked away in the forest. You'll cross several streams (bring waterproof boots in spring!), and the wildflowers along this trail are outstanding.
Trailhead: Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Local secret: Seriously, this trail doesn't get the attention it deserves, which means more peace and quiet for you.
